Thank you!! This was pure gold and much needed. I could *not* figure out the "Home" thing, and knowing that the Inbox is really where the things I've subscribed to are living is a game-changer. Thank you so much for taking the time to help us navigate this space well. I think you should pin this somewhere or put it somewhere so that newbies who join later can navigate Substack well too.
I also like that you keep the spices in neat racks while you're working and then just let us spill the spices everywhere while you're on vacation in the chat. It gives me a great mental image about the chat.
The notes are publicly posted on the home page like a twitter/social media feed. The chats are private to paying subscribers of Pantsuit Politics (or whoever you're subscribing too. We could have made the settings so that they were available to free subscribers, but we opted for that little bit of gatekeeping and additional benefit for paying members of the Spice Cabinet.
Wow! Wow! WOW! Y’all this is an incredible amount of work and organization and archiving with such a big (and what has felt from my side of things…seamless) transition. As someone who does a bit of this type of work as my day job - thank you for the beautiful, intentional, and hours and hours and weeks and months that went into this. And as someone who finds Air Table as their love language…I can’t wait to dig in and revel in the mastery you have created. I see you all, I see the hard work, thank you thank you!
I wanted to share that members of my mother’s family moved to NC to found Elon (it was Elon College then). My great great grandfather taught Theology and Greek and his wife (sister of the college president) taught Music Theory until they had a family of four deaf and one hearing child. She resigned to educate the children at home teaching them to both read lips snd speak. All became professionals and my great aunt taught Art classes at Elon and never missed (I’m told) a basketball game. It’s a great story and I’m thrilled to know that your husband taught there.
Lol - did you see the note I added above bc I was so self conscious about it? Hahaha. I didn’t realize until halfway through that this is NOT the political moment to be repping Elon University 😂
This was great. I have watched the others but seeing it in the browser was great. I think understanding the INBOX is going to be a big win for me since I am still getting shows that autoplay after one finishes even though that is turned off This may quit happening if I clean up my INBOX. 🤞🏻
There is also a setting (I think in app and desktop version) to turn off auto-play. I can't remember exactly where it is, but I think near all the notification settings.
This was a perfect example of what any creator should do if they have multiple offerings on Substack. The work y'all are putting in is phenomenal and extremely helpful and respectful of your paid subscribers. Thank you for explaining how to get messages to Sarah/Beth in an appropriate way and explaining that they do get read. Social media has broken down some boundaries for people in public spaces - were all friend! They're just normal people like us! I subscribe so they should be here for me 24/7!) and those boundaries are hard to put back up, but the transparency ("They read all messages on Wednesday"), instruction, etc is a good way to do it. Once again, Pantsuit Politics leads the way. Substack is not intuitive for users or creators so I feel your pain as a creator and I appreciate your care in this video as a subscriber. Also thanks for explaining the chat threads. That is the one thing Patreon had that was so clear and the 'stack just isn't there yet but golly you guys are making it happen anyway! Thank you so much.
Y'all this was so helpful! I felt pretty good about finding the content that I needed but the tips and tricks you showed will simplify my life. I'm mostly on my phone when using substack but using the browser version and inbox feels like the old days of google reader for me. Might start my day off in the browser and use the app afterwards. Thanks for all your hard work!!
Google Reader! I loved it so much. Google had some random stuff they tried back in the day, and some of it was weird and sucked (whatever their "let's be facebook" thing was), but some things were gold. I miss Reader.

This is the BEST! Thanks so much. On question, though, how do you conceive of the difference between chats and notes? Is it just the paywall?

My Thanksgiving break plans were to “figure out substack.” This has saved my holiday, so thank you for giving me time for other fun things! 🫶
Thank you for this explainer! I’ve been struggling with substack and this was very helpful!
Alise, I need to know if your sweatshirt is demonstrating Elon superfan status?
Asked as I wear a similar design sweatshirt with CARBS

But I do think I’m going to need a CARBS sweatshirt immediately. Or maybe a CARBS & DAIRY one, if such a thing exists. 😂
I should have checked the notes! I didn’t see it, just your attire! Here’s where I got the carbs version:

Happy to be an example, anytime! Also have already used the Airtable archive to find an episode on NAFTA from 2016 - superb tool!
Can you manage notifications in the app, or just using the website?
You can, I posted some screen share videos in the earlier post https://open.substack.com/pub/pantsuitpolitics/p/how-to-use-substack?r=18thgd&utm_medium=ios

Super helpful!!!!!! Thank you for this tutorial

Ahh, I loved Google Reader!!!!! Those were the days 😂

Omg I loved Google Reader, too. I seriously wish I could add the last few food blogs I follow into substack bc that would make my life so streamlined.
I'm a Customer Success Manager and this entire video is a Master Class in how to help customers be successful. Good job everybody. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I followed other creators on Substack before y'all moved over but you are the first to show me how to use the platform. THANK YOU!
Second this. Thanks! Substack should be paying you for this video.
Helpful yes but not excited about seeing all the stuff from other feeds. Can see why your team likes it.
In the app (not sure about desktop version), you can set it to make the inbox your default view. That cuts down on seeing the extra stuff.
