I think society could benefit a lot from a new version of media literacy education that emphasizes that these services don’t exist to make you happy. What you all talked about with the different levels of intimacy is totally viable as long as most people accept that not every space is for every person. “Free speech” is a term used to whitewash what is often bullying, but I think younger generations especially don’t believe they have the right to question it.
Back in 2020 when a lot of us were being educated about privilege and systemic racism it was a revelation to me to hear Black thinkers say, in essence, this is not a space for your opinion. I grew up feeling like my opinion was always warranted, and hearing someone kindly point out that others’ views were more relevant was startling, but educational. Back to online discourse, I think it’s time to actively train people that their views aren’t always welcome and shouldn’t be, and that’s not a harm to them.
The algorithm kills community building. I was loving TikTok when I found spaces and content creators that I liked and engaged with on my following feed and now they’ve practically killed the following feed. I can see maybe 10 videos from people I follow and then it says I’ve watched them all. BS. It forces me to go to the FYP and then I get random content I don’t want. I get content from people I follow but totally out of order. I can’t keep up in the spaces I like with the creators I like to engage with because I’m not shown their content without purposefully searching each of them out.
1) I don't think any social media platform is any more or less authentic than another, regardless of demographics.
2) What you all are describing is network news pre-CNN. Which some of us still remember and yes, it was better.
3) I think journalists should be in every lane. (actual journalists, not people who decided one day they would be a journalist)
4) I don't believe in neverending corporate profits. It's a scam that I haven't figured out yet.
5) The democratization of the internet lies in hosting your own site, not posting on someone else's site. There is no free speech or censorship when someone else owns the stump.
6) I'm completely down with sub-sub-sub groups and I believe they're necessary, yet every time people try to do this in my circle, there is accusation of being exclusive. This has broken down multiple groups that I know of. Not every place is for every person and creators should be able to decide who to allow.

I loved this conversation and am grateful you recorded it for us to watch later!
What a great conversation! Something I’ll be thinking about for a long time: “Objectivity is not the same as equality.” Thanks for sharing.
This conversation is so important… I think it would be beneficial for the main feed.
Yes, Elon is automatically the first thing everyone sees on X, which is why I don’t go there anymore.

7) We sure talk a lot wherever we are.
Delightful
This was such an amazing convo and I learned so much!
This was so amazingly easy to watch! (And also great content!) Really love this feature of Substack.
